Si todavía no tienes tu abono, puedes comprarlo aquí.

Dip Shim aka The happy man & The time machine.

  • ¿Dejaremos de ver a Happy Man?

theBasement presents Steffi b2b Virginia at Music Port Fest 2019

Whilst we are still feeling completely festive after a hefty March delivering nothing but the best house music to our favourite family, and using ‘it’s Fallas’ as an excuse to drink until our hearts were content, we still have one thing on the brain……summer 2019.

The fifth and sixth of July this summer will see theBasement collaborate together with La Darsená hosting one of the most anticipated electronic events the world stage has to offer, featuring not only your local house selectors theBasement Soundsystem and the prominent Swedish powerhouses that make up Studio Barnhus, but also two formidable female electronic DJ’s, bringing a whole new dimension to the event, and hitting the stage with an unforgettable B2B set. Those two Dj’s are Steffi and Virginia.

Steffi

Image result for steffi dj

With a musical production interest blossoming in 2002, Steffi saw that after some time creating sounds from her house in the Netherlands that the her arsenal of production skills could take her to the next level in the musical world. After a period of playing in her hometown and leaving her mark there, she then decided to move in 2007, and quickly becoming the global epicentre of electronic music, Berlin was to be the city which welcomed her with loving arms.

She quickly entered the limelight of Berlin’s electronic scene and held a residency at Panorama Bar in Germany’s famed Berghain club, creating herself a status of not only an expert within production, but also behind the decks at the most revered club in the world. With that said, Steffi holds a unique position in the world of electronic music, one which looks further afield than playing before thousands at packed-out stages, but extends in work as a sedulous producer that makes this dutch woman the genius she is. To date, she has released six albums, two of which on Berghain-owned label Ostgut Ton, as well as releases on Permanent Vacation and Underground Quality, not to mention the ownership of her three labels, Klakson, Dolly and Dolly Dubs, which have resumed to show her ballsy, genre-defying eclecticism as she looks to take her musical career to the next level.

Steffi runs her three aforementioned labels alone, and with a non-promo policy, she has neither press nor advertising for any of the tracks released describing the music as «just for the lovers….they know the product will be in [local] record shops in two weeks».

I can’t lose control of cooking in my own kitchen!

Her impressive home-studio in Berlin is what many would call the perfect set-up, and with a bounty of synthesisers from the 80’s and 90’s, as well the hard-to-acquire Japanese drum synth Ult Sound DS-4, it is clear to see that this armoury helps to make a growing discography of warm, classic-inspired hardware-enriched records, complimenting this dutch virtuosos erudition.

Steffi is flying the flag from her home in Berlin, and playing alongside the likes of New Jerseyan celebrity Kerri Chandler this summer, as well as previous releases on her labels from the likes of Boddika and  Dexter, one need not too much detail to boast this dutch women’s prowess.

Yours & Mine, Steffi’s debut album proliferated her career in 2011, providing her a springboard to experiment with not only a plethora of different sounds, but also of genres. Despite being known for her ecstatic sets and ability to mix most genres together and make it sound like the two were made to be played together, this debut album is very much one of Deep House, and this is where it all started for young Steffi. On the album features DJ, producer and Vocalist Virginia, providing a sensual and bass-driven sultry vocal on «You Own My Mind» that nicely underlines the album’s strengths as well «Yours» prevailing dance floors for some time with it’s hypnotic brand of techno.

I’m this far now in my career that I just wanted to really do something without having a concept in mind, and just go with the flow and explore the possibilities if I really don’t put any limitations on myself.

The latest of her albums, World Of the Walking State is a musical egress from what we have heard previously from Steffi, and we can’t complain. She has talked previously of embarking on a new musical episode, one that diverts from her original grain of sound, and looks forward to new entirely new electronic terrain. One can easily hear the shift that has taken place within her music, and how mature sounding each and every song is on the album. With subdued melodies interacting with each other, Steffi holds the listeners hand as she takes you on a journey through the aerosphere of her new-found bewildering but delightful music.

Have a listen.

Virginia

Growing up in Munich, the accomplished DJ, singer, songwriter and producer Virginia has been around the block for something of a decade. Inspired by house and electro tracks dating from the 80’s and 90’s, Virginia soon came to realise that life in front of the crowd was her vocation. With sets a far-cry from what one would call conventional, Virginia incorporates live vocals whilst mixing her discs which is by no means heard of nor common in the industry.

Her Boiler Room set in Dam is worth a listen:

You can hear her smokey vocals penetrate the song at the 3:30 mark in her BR set in Amsterdam sounding exactly what you would expect on a pre-recorded track. One can literally feel the room shake as she rocks the crowd…or maybe thats just the speakers ?.Virginia never fails to surprise her audience by letting her raw prowess and singularity shine through and she has been since the late 90’s when she graced the stage with her extraordinary skills.

She brings a breath of fresh air to the game and no one can complain.

A dame in her own right, and a genius both behind the decks and particularly when armed with a microphone, Virgina, like Steffi, has held a residency at Berghain’s Panorama bar for some years following that in Frankfurt and Munich. Her standout single ‘Yours’ from 2011 produced by good friend/DJ Steffi showcases how her sexy and sultry vocals are perfectly aligned alongside a sensual relaxed house track.

Co-produced by Dexter, Martyn and Steffi, Virgina released her first studio album «Fierce For the Night» also on Berghain’s OstGut-ton which perfectly displayed her vocal aptitude and was a true ode to traditional analog house music. Perfect for clubs, various tracks became synonymous with dance floor beats, and were an instant hit as soon as media platforms got hold of them which just goes to show what this young prodigy is capable of.

That said, despite managing to keep the sound consistent throughout said first studio album, the theme of the songs does clearly change after every few songs, which isn’t apparent in many contemporary pop albums. «Funkfert» was one of the biggest hits on her album, and that doesn’t surprise us. The lyrics throughout the album pursue the same theme, and with a snippet of her verse detailing «I don’t want your loving, don’t wanna feel like this» as well as swinging drums and minimal baseline –  this definitely follows suit.

This is one of our favourites:

If you haven’t already, check out the line up for our first appearance at Music Port Fest, the pacemaker for global electronic dance music located in Sagunt, Spain.

Get your tickets here and we’ll see you there below the July sun with only the best house.

San Diego born Never Dull will star in next release with theBasement Discos

San Diego born, Tijuana raised Alberto de Santiago, a DJ, producer and songwriter more commonly known by his alias Never Dull, has only been on the scene for about two years but has already released tracks for prominent labels like Feedasoul, Dansu Discs and Hopera Records.

It wasn’t until late 2017 that young Alberto stepped into the limelight, and with his two self-released tracks Really Think about it and What is Jazz? prompting immense interest from a bounty of independent labels around the world, the only way is up for this young dude.

2018 saw a great first half for after Never Dull signed with Chicago’s label Large Music with his single United, Under One Roof going on to be an underground electronic anthem in both America and Europe, reaching #60 of Traxsource’s Top 200 Deep House tracks of 2018, which just goes to show the potential that this Tijuanan-bred DJ holds for the future.

One of Never Dull’s latest endeavours titled Cool Jazz Boogy brings together what seems like sensual Spanish vocals with an array of slow-moving relaxed synths partnered with the benign plucking of guitar strings – which makes for lovely listening may we add. As soothing and relaxing as this track can be, one can’t deny the desire to stand up and get ‘boogie[ing]’.

Despite seeming like a career in its nascence, the maturity of the sound of the music is rife, and if one wasn’t aware of how long this dude has been on the scene, the thought of him producing tracks for two years would seem inconceivable. With the Saxyness, the below song reaching over 240 thousand hits on youtube, and all his videos surpassing one million views easily, this young man already has quite the following.

Here’s Never Dull’s latest addition to his disography, released just last month and posted by our favourite channel Gazzz696….It’s awesome.

Keep an eye out for this release, we’ll be posting about it on social media so all you beautiful people can hear it.

The Swedish House Masters behind Studio Barnhus

The last few decades have seen the surfacing of a hotbed of cutting-edge electronic prowess and creativity coming from the winter wonderland that is Sweden. With some of the most recognised electronic producers and Dj’s out there being from Sweden, one would only expect the Swedish electronic labels to follow suit. And follow suit they did. Amongst an already saturated industry and rife competition, one label that truly stands out is Studio Barnhus.

A basement in Kornél’s hometown became available when he was looking for a permanent spot to produce his music and thats when luck struck. Fellow Swedes Axel Boman and Petter Nordkvist, known DJ’s at the time wanted to move into a new place and the three-man basement on Barnhusgaten (orphanage) street was soon to become the prominent label that is Studio Barnhus. The mind has not to wonder where the name of the studio was procured.

It is clear to see that this young prodigious vanguard of producers making Studio Barnhus are by no means looking to fit into the ordinary or conventional bracket of music. All aspects are as organic as it gets, and producing in their old-school Stockholm studio allows them to experiment with different tools and techniques, making for some of the most unique music that ears have heard for years.

Three young Swedish producers all driving in the same direction, with the same vision: To create the music they love and share it with the people of the world, and whilst many would think three a difficult number, these young dudes manage not only to make it work, but bounce ideas off each other and create projects that have drawn such attention to not only themselves as individuals but a label as a whole. With each and every member fusing different genres together, the groups dynamic continues to thrive in its nascence and the only possible direction for this trio seems to be up.

Stockholm is kind of small, you know, so if you’re playing the same music, you’re going to end up meeting sooner or later.

Deviating so far from the musical norms one would expect on a house label, Kornél, Axel and Petter have together formed a ‘Scandinavian sound’ with their abnormal sounds and their originality for which so many can relate. All three compliment each other in so many different ways, it is evident that these three leading the charge from Sweden are going to continue impacting the game, and nobody is going to tell them otherwise.

We salute you Studio Barnhus.

Each and every one of these dudes making up Studio Barnhus will be performing together at theBasement and La Darsena’s Music Port Fest this coming July on the 5th and 6th. Kornél, Axel and Petter will all be playing on the electronic stage, exhibiting only their best in the port of Segorbe, alongside Steffi and Virginia and our very own local selectors theBasement Soundsystem.

Kornél Kovács

Kornél at Sugar Mountain Melbourne

Dubbed one of the twenty best Dj’s in the world by Mixmag, this Swedish powerhouse has made quite the name for himself, and being at the helm of Studio Barnhus, one can only imagine how undeniably bright the future is for this gifted fellow. Exposed to his parents’ record collection at a young age, Kornél played his first Drum’n’Bass gig at the young age of fourteen, kickstarting his affair with electronic dance music.

After this saw an arid period where Kornél didn’t play for a few years, however when he reached the legal age to enter clubs, he again picked up the headphones and started playing house music instead of Drum’n’Bass. By this time, Kovács had become quite the household name both in his hometown and his country, holding a residency at Paradise club then moving onto the Red Bull Music Academy, which would later take him to the next level in his musical escapade.

During his time at Red Bull Music Academy, Kornél started Studio Barnhus alongside fellow Swedes Axel and Petter, becoming the ultimate music institution and a trademark of Sweden. The studio later receiving unprecedented attention, attracting artists like Baba Stiltz, MLiR and HNNY building an unforgettable troupe.

There’s never a time when this guy isn’t busy, he’s either cooking up something new in his Stockholm studio with his partners, or playing sets across the world. He’s playing at the famous Stealth in Nottingham, Liverpool’s 24 Kitchen Street and A La Folie in Paris over the next few months which just goes to show that this guy gets booked by the best of the best.

Axel Boman

A true genius and unique character, Axel has made a splash in the musical world through his weird and unorthodox sounds, accompanied by his very likeable character which is ever-present on his Instagram. Where so many lack charisma and personality in the industry, Axel’s true character can be seen not only on his Instagram, but also in his sets and interviews, where he comes across as this young vibrant musician who rarely takes himself too seriously and loves to have a joke.

Having days with a synth melody stuck in his head accompanied by five or six samples is the mixture with which Axel manages to constantly produce fresh catchy music, and he does it so well. Not being a classically trained artist, it seems that Axel takes this and uses it to his advantage. Where trained artists search for that catchy hook or melody that fits a track, Axel experiments with different samples until something clicks.

The loose and fun styles of this art-school grad make him an infectious figure musically and a refreshing one personally. A quirky sense of humour and compelling character that compliments his talent behind the decks makes for heavy artillery when competing against other huge names in the business, however we doubt that this is Axel’s intention. His humility is evident and he really is just producing to make the music he loves.

They read my mind! ?

Take a moment to soak up your surroundings if you hear «1979» played at Dias de Campo in a lengthy DJ set, and the memory won’t soon disappear. This is but one of many of Axel’s songs that would accompany the serene halcyon surroundings that the mountains of Montanejos offers in just some of its many peaceful aspects. As much as the track holds you in a starry-eyed stasis, the song also tickles and prods you to get your groove on.

Petter Nordkvist

The last and by no means the least cardinal component that makes Studio Barnhus what it is is Petter Nordkvist, and with a slightly different production style to his two partners, he manages to distinguish himself from the rest with his own sound. With a diverse young talent that you’d struggle to find anywhere else, Petter is going from strength to strength as he continues to exhibit his raw talent not only through playing at gigs, but also his prowess within production in the studio.

Petter’s reputation has been building as quick as ever over recent years and has held quarterly residencies at Border Community’s label nights at Turnmills in London, and with mixes and productions known for fusing techno, electro, dub, ambient, acid and deep house, he has managed to create his own sound which is unsurprisingly easy on the ears, and concertedly with Axel and Kornél, this trio are a force to be reckoned with, and will be for a lifetime.

Here are some of Studio Barnhus’ best so far. Expect more to come:

Shakarchi & Stranéus – Mogadishu

MLiR – People

Baba Stiltz – Born2Live

Esther Silex – Oskar

theBasement Tortilla Madrid @ Costa Social Club

Waking, baking and shaking at Días de Campo with Dan Shake

For the last few years, Dan’s name has become quite that of the household in the dance scene. From releasing his debut album in 2014 on Moodymann’s estimable label Mahogani Music, he did nothing but continue on his already successful path and created his own label Shake, on which he then went to release his own tracks.

Hailing from London, Dan was the only DJ to be part of Mahogani Music’s ensemble with neither Detroit heritage nor Detroit residency, which says a lot. Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr.) has not only been a huge inspiration according to the London-based Dj but has also given his career an incredible boost from a young age.

Image result for Dan shakeGaining support from the likes of highly-revered DJ’s such as Antal and Giles Peterson, Dan launched his 12″ edit series, Shake Tapes, which is essentially an outlet for the Dan’s private stash of DJ-friendly cuts, exploring all corners of the globe.

Despite his influences from the house scenes of music like New York, Chicago and ultimately that of Detroit, Dan is most illustrious for his authenticity and uniqueness whether that be in front of a huge Melbourne crowd or behind his decks in the studio.

This London DJ is going from strength to strength, and as one of the finest selectors around, he proved more than capable in assuming his role in contemporary dance music  and performing as far afield as Japan and Australia, closing Dimensions Festival 2018 as well as performing B2B with some of the house music’s finest…

Shake plays ‘a load of dope disco edits, some funk, sould, afro-boogie and a bit of acid now and then’, covering a large variety of genres, which are easily picked-up on in both his live sets and his productions.

Listen to Shake’s prowess as an artist in the song below, recreating now the sound which has defined dance music.

If you really want to feel what he sounds like at sets; put your headphones in or turn up the speakers because you can feel the Shake in this.

It’s fair to say this guy has come a long way, and the only way is up for this prospect from London. Every set, every remix and every production continues to exhibit his raw and unique talent, and we can’t wait to see him play alongside our Dias de Campo outfit this coming may.

theBasement welcomes with loving arms young Pépe to Dias de Campo

DJ and producer of music, Jose Bernat, better known by Pépe, decided one day to pack his bags and start his musical escapade to the United Kingdom with sights of greener pastures. Known for its melting pot of cultures and more importantly musical genres, Brighton was the city which gained the interest of young Pépe. The city allowed him to absorb all the different sounds that were circulating in clubs, enabling the Valencian prodigy to start building his diverse repertoire of music, and make a splash in the musical pool. Plucking individual characteristics and sounds from a plethora of genres, Pépe then started to infuse all that he had learnt together, forming a very unique sound that many had not heard before, especially in the quirky cosmopolitan seaside city that was Brighton.

«DJ MAGS TRACK OF THE YEAR»

His debut release on the highly reputable label Lobster Theramin with «Lemon Fanta» received omnipresent recognition and was given «track of the Year» by DJ Mag in 2017. The tune was named as an ode to his childhood memories reliving his days in the beautiful coastal city of Valencia drinking Lemon Fanta on the terrace whilst eating paella.

From adding a typical jungle rewind on a house theme to the inclusion of sub-bass dubstep to an electro song, the Brighton scene appears to have made this young prodigy a true scientist of music, creating sounds that many can’t.

Pépe has successfully been making a name for himself in the game through his raw talent within producing and mixing music and has featured previously alongside the likes of Project Pablo, Session Victim and DJ Seinfield.

«I’ve been more concerned that my influences come from a place a little further away from dance music, I think that helps me a lot to create a unique sound».

After coming into the spotlight, Pépe felt that responsibility and pressure that so many do in the industry to put out fresh and newfangled content. And when so many struggle, Pépe showed his true colours to anyone that thought that the successful run of tracks from this young Spanish virtuoso was to cease anytime soon. Disposing of the more conventional equipment used by the majority of artists and picking up new tools, Pépe did as he set out to do: steer clear of ordinary and familiar music to make his own unique sound that identified him and only him.

Growing up here, Pépe is one of the better-informed people about the electronic music scene out in Valencia, and has been able to view the transition this quirky city has experienced over the years. In its nascence, La Ruta del Bakalao built the foundations of what was to become the most vibrant and unique electronic movement that Spain had ever seen.

In 1980, the front-running clubs of La Ruta del Bakalao; Chocolate, Espira and Spook saw a vanguard of Spain’s most treasured music pioneers with Tony «el Gitano», Juan «Torpedo» as well as the arrival in 1985 of Fran Lenaeres who would then go on to revolutionise the Techno scene, being the first to mix tracks at the same BPM and with unprecedented selecting skills. This period brought mass media which covered the scene in a very sensationalist way and created social alarm. The DJ’s at the time we no longer playing avant-guard underground music and saw a huge regression in music in terms of both quality and creativity which prompted the demise of the rave scene and the DJ’s which were at the heart of it.

The Noughties then saw a rebirth of the scene with several smaller clubs opening in more urban areas of Valencia, and with it came a new age of young aspiring artists who exhibited such talent that the presence an electronic renaissance was nigh. One of those artists was Pépe.

Preferring to remain anonymous with his short and indelible alias, Pépe traverses between many different musical genres and shows his true colours on all musical platforms, whether that be his recent mix for Rinse FM or his remix below of Drake’s Controlla. It’s very good may we say.

With a small yet bright discography, this young Valencian constantly has his head in record boxes to ensure catchy samples and fresh music always end up in his hands.

Pépe will no doubt continue bringing fresh music to all platforms and sets for a long time. We can’t wait to keep him playing him in theBasement studios and are delighted to be hosting him in Montanejos this coming May for our third edition of Dias de Campo.
