Top 10 Music Production Plugins Preferred by Top Producers Today

For artists and producers alike, a digital audio workstation is something of a must. Whether you are new to the industry or not, it helps you create amazing music. But when you think that a digital audio workstation is enough, you are wrong! There is a way for you to bring your music’s quality up a notch. And that is what a music production plugin is for.

Some people say that you don’t need a third-party plugin outside your DAW. Sure, a DAW is a good playground for sonic possibilities capable of delivering breath-taking results.

But, a third-party plugin helps in creating the highest calibre of professional-quality music. It helps evolve your studio setup as well as develop your production skills.

There are tons of music-related apps and more from joyofandroid.com. But in this article, we are giving you the top 10 must-have music production plugins this year.

Are you honing your basic skills or mastering your mixing expertise? These plugins under your base DAW toolset will surely extend your sound palette.

1. Softube – Saturation Knob

When it comes to images, videos, and audio this one word always comes up – saturation. The problem with DAW is that the recording is too clean, crisp, and pristine. It lacks the vibe analogue goodness that we usually hear in recordings. Softube gives you that saturation goodness.

The idea is the more you turn the knob, the more it gives you the distortion – a good kind of distortion – on your recording. You can use it to fatten the bass lines and give your recording a nice vibe. You can even add harmonics and shimmer to the vocals. Softube is very versatile and functional. And what’s more? This plugin is free to download!

2. Camel Audio – Camelcrusher

When it comes to music production plugins, there is one name that rises above. In 2015, Apple acquired Camel Audio. This plugin is not new, but many producers continue to use it – a testament to how good this plugin is.

Filter, distortion, compressor, and master are its major features that you can use in vocals, basslines, leads, and almost anything. This free plugin is packed with so many features but is still easy to use. This is the perfect playground to unleash the creativity in you!

3. Xfer Records – OTT Compressor

The OTT Compressor from Xfer Records brings an over-the-top compressor with amazing coloration that now associates with modern music. You can use it to utilize on your bass, master, and leads. You can play with the depth of the recording and control the signal that goes through it.

Keyscape will surprise with how versatile this plugin is.

In Keyscape, you can find custom controls that deal with the timbre and effects that display the range of these extraordinary keyboards. It has all the classical pieces you can think of. The generators each have virtual analogue waves, wavetables, a source/sample of noise. Phase Plant is loaded with wavetables and samples that are available for you to use. You can also opt to import your own samples and even design your very own wavetables. Ideally, you can combine them to create a more unique result that reflects you as an artist.

If you want to improve your, skills you can definitely try on the more complicated plugins. Hopefully, our list of must-have music production plugins aids you with your dreams on stage!

Quick chat with Marco Resmann about life, corona and Upon. You Records’ 13th anniversary

Not the best times of our lives, but the ones we have to deal with… It’s always good to have a chat with a respected player in the underground scene. In this case with Marco Resmann, head honcho of Upon. You Records, a Berlin-based record label that celebrates its 13th anniversary with a two-parts compilation filled with killer grooves and vast amounts of energy to take the dance floors once they are opened.
You can listen to this beautiful compilation below, and buy it here.

Hello Marco! Happy anniversary on your imprint. Not the best time for a celebration, but still worth all the way up till here. Right before we start throwing questions at you, wishing the best for your family, friends, and team.

You were in Thailand when all this worldwide situation exploded.
Did you have to rush to go back home?

Marco: Not really. We decided to enjoy our family vacation as much as possible. The kids handled that of course much better than us adults. But at the end of the holidays things also started to drastically change in Thailand but we managed to leave the country at the right time.

How has been this corona confinement for you?
In Spain, it’s been very strict. Has it been the same in Germany?

Marco: We came back from Thailand beginning of April and had to go straight into quarantine at home for 2 weeks. We were not allowed to leave the house at all. Since then we kept things easy and spent most of the time at home with our kids, as Kindergartens in Berlin were closed for most of the children. In general the limitations in Germany are luckily less restrictive compared to Spain. Due to the federalism here the restrictions are slightly different from state to state. Now they have started to loose them step by step. Kindergartens, Schools and restaurants are allowed to open under certain conditions. Public transportation and shopping for example is just allowed if you wear a mask. Germany’s most popular sport football is also back in the game just to finish the season without audience. Worryingly wise the group of conspiracy theorists are making more and more noise in Germany and started with protests on the streets.

What have you been up to? Studio? Cooking? Exercise?

Marco: We mainly renovated our apartment, maintained the balcony and entertained our kids. Until today I did not go to the studio as often as I used to as I’m still struggling with the right motivation and inspiration. Finger crossed that I’m getting back to my routine very soon.

How has Berlin’s clubbing scene lived this corona breakdown?

Marco: This corona shutdown hit the clubs in Berlin pretty hard. Unfortunately all of them have to face a very doubtful future. Besides the postponement of rent and the protection of dismissal there’s no real support from the government until today. That’s why they had to call for donations and collaborate with projects like United We Stream and Arte Concert to get a bit of attention to save the club scene. The feedback and the amount of money after the donations was quite overwhelming. So there’s hope, even though there’s still a long way to go. Fingers crossed!

From DJs to record shop owners or festival promoters: people in the music business are certainly struggling like many other activities in the economy. There isn’t a single part of the music industry that won’t be affected by the coronavirus outbreak. The most obvious is the high profile festival cancellations, and the big star DJs…

Do you think this situation will be useful to bring back to Earth some big-headed DJs and maybe bring back some of the realness of the underground scene?

Marco: I definitely think we reached a point where things got a bit out of control. The amount of money that has been paid for DJ sets lost here and there its relation. Hypes were mainly leading the audience, quality wasn’t that essential anymore and marketing became the most powerful tool in the game. The scene will certainly not be as it was before and this could be a good thing. It’s now time to reflect, step back from the race and take a break.

As a Watergate resident DJ, what are your thoughts on the constant support on clubbing from Berliners? It’s something that we really look up to. If Ipse burns down, there they are, helping out for a rebirth. If a fire hits Club der Visionaere, the same happened.

Marco: Berlin’s club scene is something very unique worldwide. People here appreciate this fact a lot and try to keep that alive as long as possible. But the support from outside shouldn’t be underestimated.

From Lebanon or Brasil to Australia or Thailand, you’ve played lately all around the globe. Where do you think is the hottest clubbing scene in the world? (Besides Berlin of course)

Marco: There are so many hot spots all over the world but my heart beats especially for Brazil, Lebanon, Israel and Australia.

In these 13 years of label history, what are the happiest memories you could highlight? Charts, showcases, releases… anything that comes to your head with a smile on your face.

Marco: All of our label nights at Panorama Bar and Watergate are still putting a smile on my face. Due to Corona we had to cancel our 13th anniversary party at Watergate on April 4th. Fingers crossed that we get the chance to find a new date as soon as possible. Furthermore our traditional OFF-Week parties in Barcelona, hosted by our Catalan family from Soundworks, were a yearly highlight as well. Another big and proud moment was to release our catalogue number 100 in December 2015. The EP was called „Hundert“ and is still one of my favourite personal productions.

To sum up and regarding this 13 years of Upon. You Records’ history. Could you be able to name your five personal favorite tracks so we can share them with our audience?

Ruede Hagelstein – Minus

Marco Resmann – Hundert

DJ Le Roi – You Don’t Know

Kristian Heikkila – Mystik Life

Martin Landsky & Marco Resmann – Fred The Ball feat. Jonny Cruz

Well Marco, it was nice to have a chat like this on such a special occasion. From all theBasement Crew, we just want to send to all the Upon. You team our best regards, wishing you another 13 years of joy, dance, and good times. Hopefully we can all go back to our lives soon and continue to jam to your music and DJ sets.

Marco: Thank you so much. See you hopefully soon on some dance floor. x Marco

Women who thrive in the house music scene

The electronic house music scene…an industry where female DJs are not often put on the front of the stage. Yet, women have been in it and stepping up to the plate for many years now, they have been drawing crowds on the dancefloor and at the world’s biggest festivals. Women have something very special when it comes to making music, and it shows.

Starting with old school Divas.
The first ladies of House.

A handful of female artists have actually been pioneers of the house music milieu. They are singers, producers, DJs, and musicians. They have helped with the development of music and have taken risks by fighting to assert their rights. They simply have been part of history. So let’s go back in time and look at the impact that these extraordinary women have had on house music. Songs that we have sung to, danced to, cried to, but most importantly, songs that will always remain etched in our hearts. Be ready to jump into the late 70s-90s.

American singer Donna Summer wrote the lyrics to what became “I Feel Love”. She recorded the voices in one session and never thought it would be a hit song, only that it would be part of a good album. The song is sent to Neil Bogart, founder of Casablanca Records, the first single will be «I Feel Love». Donna plays the disco diva like no one else. With her significant debut in the mid-70s and her collaborations with Giorgio Moroder (Italian composer and disco producer), she clearly dominated disco and sold over 140 million albums worldwide during her career.

Donna Summer – I Feel Love (1977)

Everybody remembers that famous “La da dee la dee da, La da dee la dee da” from the timeless classic “Gypsy Woman” sung by Crystal Waters. Originally an office worker for the DC government, Crystal was also the daughter of a jazz musician and the niece of famous female vocalist  Ether Waters. Surrounded by the music world, Crystal was quickly propelled to the top of the club charts at the beginning of the 90s.

“some people would boo us saying House music wasn’t real music. It was a real struggle to get out of there.”

Crystal Waters – Gypsy Woman (1991)

Another recording artist goddess is Ce Ce Peniston. Born in Dayton, Ohio, she was first a beauty queen and got elected as Miss Black Arizona in 1989. Cecelia Peniston signed with former A&M label (now Universal Music Group) and made a roaring debut with the single «Finally», one of the greatest international hits of 1991. The track was ranked No.5 in the U.S. sales and No.1 in the dance category.

Ce Ce Peniston – Finally (1991)

One of the greatest voices in the house is also Robin S, an American singer, and songwriter that marked the 90s. “Show Me Love” is probably the most famous song by Robin S. A song that has been sampled, reworked, and remixed more than a dozen times by artists, bands, and DJs from different countries almost 20 years after its original release. Did you know that this track, which the world is familiar with is, in fact, a remix from a song formerly created in 1990 “Show Me Love-Montego Mix.” The vocal is indeed the same, but its deep trademark synth hook we’re all used to or its melody is actually very different. It’s a cheerful disco track with funky electric guitars in the background.

Robin S – Show Me Love (Montego 1990)

And the hit you’re undoubtedly familiar with: Robin S – Show Me Love (1993)

23 years ago, in the spring of 1997 came out a house and women’s anthem that resounded on the radio and in the clubs. “Free”. A cult release from Strictly Rhythm, but essentially a song with gloomy and incredible guitar riffs that became the biggest hit of the American singer Ultra Naté who already began her music career at the early age of 21.

Ultra Naté – Free (1997)

We gotta keep in mind that the list of these goddesses of the house music is far from being complete. There is a multitude of other female artists. Barbara Tucker, singer in the everlasting “I get lifted,” “Beautiful People” or “Deep Inside”. Then, of course, we have the endlessly fearless voice of Inaya Day you probably heard in “Pushing On”, or the soothing and at the same time playful voice of Monique Bingham in “We had a thing”. Their songs have been played on a loop by international radios and have surely shaped the house music of today. Without the Divas, would there even be house?

Angels of the 2000s all the way until now:

Now let’s dive into another era, the glorious 2000s, and the rise of plenty of other female artists in the house music industry. During these years, there are still a good number of female artists who prove to us that this element is not only for men. If the clichés of the «DJ wannabe who uses her aspects to break into the scene» persist, little by little, women made their mark with their talent. And it’s better this way!

Heading first to the UK, where, every Friday from 7 to 9 pm, presenter and DJ Annie Mac hosts her own show on BBC Radio 1: Annie Mac’s Mash. Annie Mac is not strictly speaking a DJ, yet the Irish woman plays an influential role in the world of house. Indeed, she is the one who programs all the new electro/house trends in Great Britain, which are then listened to and broadcasted all over the world!

Let’s now go on a trip to Germany. It’s in its capital that the undeniable figurehead of the Berlin house scene, Cinthie, becomes one of those DJs whose reputation is well established. An irreplaceable resident of the famous Watergate, a regular at the Boiler Room, she also runs three record labels 803 Crystal Grooves, Beste Modus, and We R House. Labels that are intended to be a beam of light for music lovers, delivering a punchy creativeness from house to deep and minimal. Cinthie’s musical influences come straight from Detroit and Chicago’s house. Cinthie’s intuitive ability to weave deep-yet-bassy mixes has made her an icon of the new generation of German house music. She also runs and manages a record shop under the name of Elevate. A real superhero and a true inspiration for us.

Still in Germany, we have tINI, a DJ which is again coming straight from Berlin and that has overflowing energy which is 100% felt in her music. A music style close to minimal house with tropical percussion and feels. After having trodden the soil of Ibiza, she created the “tINI of the Gang” and then “Part of the Gang” evenings in South America.

Other german-based female DJ’s have made it to the top. Virginia and Steffi, both resident DJ’s at the Panorama Bar in the famous Berlin Berghain club. But if those 2 names ring a bell, it’s because they have also been present at the Music Port Fest which theBasement proudly collaborated with last summer. The two DJ’s brought a whole new magnitude to the festival. Virginia’s voice brought a sensual touch, contrasting perfectly with her high velocity of the bass line and Steffi added melody to her tracks which turned the festival into an epic atmosphere.

Virginia and Steffi mixing at theBasement stage «La Dársena», Music Port Fest July 2019.

“I can’t lose control of cooking in my own kitchen!” – Steffi

She is an American artist from Chicago and she was ranked best DJ of the year in 2016, we now present you iconoclastic The Black Madonna. She plays DJ sets that sweep you across a wide spectrum of electronic music, from techno to disco to house, adding dynamism and fluidity that is always perfectly mastered. Beyond being an exceptional DJ and producer, at the top of the game after years of hard work, The Black Madonna is also known for her remarkable militancy, political awareness, her open-mind towards LGBT, and her involvement in helping women victims of harassment.

And yes! Let’s not forget to cite some of many other house female DJs of today who deserve a shout out. For instance, Australian CC:DISCO! and her boogie feels, American bubbly Honey Dijon mastering cross-genre sets, or South Korean Peggy Gou with her hypnotic shifting to a more acidic style. Three different house music styles, three different atmospheres yet, three incredible missions which are essentially the same: bringing a smile on people’s faces, energy to peoples’ feet, and euphoria in people’s minds.

Hope for more upcoming women music artists:

Luckily, women have since long, been part of the house music scene and it will not end now. Generally speaking, figures keep proving that whether it’s behind the turntables or at the head of a festival, women are less present than men. In spite of that, we cannot ignore the fact that a number of female artists have pierced through that inequality all the way until now and have had to fight a bit harder to get where they are today: to find their place, their confidence, and their voice in the industry and the wider world. Go girls go!

Barcelona based Oriol Mubu makes his debut in Nervous Recordings with My Roots EP

Don’t let the title of this release fool you, because this EP is all about quality. The latest from Nervous Recordings comes signed by Barcelona based producer Oriol Mubu. A two-track EP that has more character than many four-track EP touching the market nowadays.

Everyone’s attention will be on «Heist 101.» Deep and dubby, it’s little more than a solid bassline combined with powerful synths and occasional heavily treated inspired by the old-school house tracks. It’s easy imagine it melting the dance floor!

You won’t have any trouble playing the more conventional «Afternoon Snack». This is a straight-up late night banger, with growling basslines and jacking drums. A great release for the Spanish House books!

This means a milestone for Oriol Mubu, who previously released music in theBasement Discos alongside Unfulano. From theBasement Crew we wish nothing but the best for this release!
